We are the Howard County affiliate of NAMI Maryland which is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness(NAMI). We are the nation’s voice on Mental Illness.
NAMI – Howard County, Maryland promotes the goals of support, education, and advocacy in our community. We offer a variety of activities that include the following:
- Support groups - families share their experiences and information about community services and facilities. Some affiliates have special support groups for children of a parent with mental illness or siblings and parents of children/adolescents with early onset of mental illness.
- Telephone networks - NAMI members are willing to offer advice in crises and assistance in resolving frustrations and difficulties with the mental health system, schools, or the criminal justice system.
- Membership meetings - will include a presentation or speaker as well as an opportunity to share ideas and strategies to help us better care for ourselves and our relative or friend who has a brain disorder.
- Publications - from affiliate, state and national organizations contain announcements, book reviews, discussions about pending legislation, reports of meetings and reprints from journal and newspaper articles.
WHAT TO DO IN A PSYCHIATRIC CRISIS IN MARYLAND
A psychiatric crisis includes but is not limited to: suicidal or homicidal thinking and/or behavior, acute psychotic symptoms, sudden change in mental status and violence. Early intervention can help prevent tragedies. NAMI Maryland has created a brochure for those who need to help someone who is in psychiatric crisis in Maryland.
